UUP Police Board members will raise PSNI recruit’s IRA medal at next Board Meeting
UUP Police Board Member and North Belfast MLA Fred Cobain said today that the UUP would be bringing up the case of the PSNI recruit who was allowed to wear an IRA medal at a recent passing out ceremony at the next meeting of the Police Board.
In a statement Mr Cobain said,
“My party colleague Tom Elliott, who broke this story, is keen to get this disgraceful matter resolved and seek an explanation as to how it was deemed appropriate for a new PSNI recruit to parade wearing an IRA medal.
I and my party colleagues on the Policing Board will be raising this matter at the next meeting of the Board where we will press the Chief Constable or one of his deputies for an explanation.
Additionally we are keen to ensure that the memories of those policemen and women who were murdered and maimed by the IRA are never sullied again in this disgraceful manner. Measures and regulations must be put in place that prevent paramilitary or terrorist insignia being worn by anyone in the police.”
