IMC Report proves that immediate return to Executive is not on political agenda - Empey

UUP Leader Sir Reg Empey in response to the IMC Report said today

“In addition to on-going criminality, the leadership of the IRA has authorised continued and on-going intelligence gathering.

Gerry Adams to explain the republican movement actions. The Secretary of State must also state how much longer he is prepared to allow the paralysis of the political process to continue because of on-going republican actions.

On the retention of some weapons clarification is needed:

  • Was the retention of small arms part of an Agreement between SF/IRA and Government?
  • Was it part of a side-deal of the Comprehensive Agreement agreed between SF/DUP and Government in December 2004?

What this latest report shows is that while some progress has been made, Republicans are still wedded to a failed ideology whose time has passed. They cannot let go of crime or covert intelligence gathering.

When coupled with news of raids in the Republic linked to IRA money laundering it is clear that they still have some way to go towards exclusively peaceful and democratic means. For this reason it is imperative that we find the maximum amount of attainable devolution for the Assembly. An immediate return to the Executive is just not on the political radar.”
