Government must support voluntary out-of-school clubs - Cobain

North Belfast MLA Fred Cobain has called on the Government to provide long term support for voluntary out of school clubs following news that 78 clubs are facing closure due to lack of funding.

Mr Cobain has backed criticism by PlayBoard, the leading voluntary out of school and play agency in Northern Ireland, who are waiting for the Government to contribute long term funding to voluntary out of school childcare.

Mr Cobain said:

“These clubs need long-term financial support from the government now – not empty promises. Hain promised a two-year funding package worth £62 million for children and young people in Northern Ireland – so where is it going? While the government dither about their decisions, these clubs are facing imminent closure”.

“These clubs play a vital role in the community, especially in deprived areas where families simply can’t afford private child care. The price of childcare in NI has increased by 20% over the last five years and on average, with childminders charging £115 per week, this is simply not a viable option for many.

“This is another example of direct rule ministers being out of touch with what’s happening on the ground. Promises of future funding won’t help pay the bills now”.
