Fermanagh launches Tourism Strategy

Fermanagh’s tourism industry will reap the benefits of a concerted marketing strategy for the county according to local Ulster Unionist assemblyman, Tom Elliott.

Speaking after the launch of ‘Destination Fermanagh’ at Castle Hume golf course on the outskirts of Enniskillen, the Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA said: “A number of years ago the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB) announced a number of signature projects across the Province to receive special funding, at that time Fermanagh was not included.

“In the face of growing competition both at home and abroad, and after consultation with stakeholders, it was felt that a county wide strategy was essential in order that we could compete in the marketplace.

“As past chairman of Fermanagh Lakeland Tourism I know that a lot of effort has gone into the work for, and launch of Destination Fermanagh, an events led project, and I am delighted that the results of our work in conjunction with NITB have now come to fruition.”

The launch was attended by Stephen Quinn, Permanent Secretary DETI, plus representatives from various stakeholders including Fermanagh District Council, Fermanagh Lakelands Tourism, and NITB.

Tom continued: “The site of the launch represents what is possible in Fermanagh. I am pleased at reports that DETI will contribute a significant amount of funding (estimated to be in excess of £3 million) into the development of this world class golf and leisure complex, which will have a knock-on effect on other tourism businesses in the area.

Tom concluded by saying: “Fermanagh has a lot to offer the tourist, both local or international, and the co-operation between all stakeholders that the ‘Destination Fermanagh’ initiative will facilitate has great potential to benefit the entire economy of the county.”
