Combating School Vandalism is everyone’s Responsibility - Elliott

Fermanagh and South Tyrone UUP Assembly member Tom Elliott is urging parents to help clamp down on vandalism attacks on local schools over the summer holiday period.

Mr. Elliott said: “This is a problem in danger of spiralling out of control.

“Schools have little enough money in their budgets to spend on day-to-day administration without having to deal with the additional burden of paying for repairs.

“That is money which is being diverted from children’s educational needs.

“With the summer holiday break, the problem can increase and I would appeal to parents to ensure their children are not on school premises at this time.”

Mr. Elliott said he was not surprised to learn that a large number of incidents of vandalism were reported to police in the area over the last year.

“Everyone has a responsibility to protect our schools which play a leading role in the community. Parents must be tell their children that school grounds are out of bounds outside school term time.

“I would appeal to the public to be vigilant and report any activity in and around school property over the summer period.”
