Remembrance Day a time to reflect on sacrifices of Generations Past - Sir Reg
Ahead of Remembrance Day commemorations, Ulster Unionist Leader Sir Reg Empey MLA has paid tribute to UK armed forces and stated that this was also an appropriate time to recommit ourselves to ensuring that Northern Ireland has finally emerged from a time of violence and terror
In a statement, the East Belfast MLA said: “As we approach Remembrance Day, it provides an opportunity for all of us in the United Kingdom to reflect upon the sacrifices endured by two great generations - those of 1914-18 and 1939-45.
“In a year during which we have commemorated the 90th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, we realise the immense cost borne by those two generations. They confronted aggression, and through their sacrifice foundations were laid for a peaceful, just and democratic Europe.
“We also recall with pride those who, serving in the security forces, paid the supreme sacrifice during our Troubles. Alongside this pride, we acknowledge the deep sense of loss still felt by so many families in Northern Ireland – and we recommit ourselves to ensuring that Northern Ireland has finally emerged from a time of violence and terror.
“Our society now enjoys a level of peace and normality that would not have been, but for the courage and sacrifice of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (George Cross) and the Ulster Defence Regiment/Royal Irish Regiment (Conspicuous Gallantry Medal).
“It is also appropriate that our thoughts be with our country’s armed forces presently serving amidst great danger in Iraq and Afghanistan. We trust that in the near future, peace and stability will be established in those two nations, allowing for the safe return of our servicemen and women.”
