Armstrong urges Parents and Guardians to ensure legislation compliance regarding Child Seats
Ulster Unionist Billy Armstrong is urging all parents and guardians of children to ensure that they have the correct child restraints to comply with new legislation that is coming into force next Tuesday, 27th February 2007. In a statement Billy said,
“Back in the autumn time the media covered the proposed new legislation putting new demands on choosing the correct Car Seat for children. However, that legislation was delayed and therefore many parents are not now ready for its implementation.
“Because of this confusion many parents have contacted my office in recent times asking when this law is being enforced. It is imperative that all parents and guardians have the correct child seats in their vehicles ready for this new law.
“This new law basically requires all children, from birth up to 135 cm in height (approx 4 ft 5 ins) to use an appropriate child seat, all of which must comply with the UN ECE 44.03 standard.
“A baby up to 13 kgs (approx age 9-12 mths) must sit in a rear facing baby seat; children up to 18 kgs (approx age 4 yrs) must sit in an appropriate forward facing Child Seat; children from 15 kgs and up must use a Booster Seat and finally children from 22 kgs (approx 6 years) must use a Booster Cushion.
“The driver is responsible for the safety of his or her passengers and a £30 fixed penalty notice will be issued if there is failure to comply with this new law. Furthermore if a case goes to courts, the maximum fine is £500.
