Nicholson tells MEPs of the Plight of those affected by last week’s Floods in Northern Ireland

Ulster Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson has told his fellow MEPs in the European Parliament in Strasbourg this evening of the plight of those people who were affected by the serious flooding that occurred in Northern Ireland last week.

Mr Nicholson also made a direct appeal to the British Government to apply for help in dealing with the floods from the European Commission’s solidarity fund.

Speaking this evening Mr Nicholson said,

“I would like to bring to the attention of the House the serious flooding that occurred last week in Northern Ireland.

“Many areas were under water in a very short period of time. Schools and homes for the elderly had to be closed and over 400 emergency calls were made. Many dwellings had serious flood damage and the Fire and Rescue service was stretched to the limit.

“I commend them for their work. I would request that the Commission implements the Solidarity Fund to give short term assistance to the affected areas. This would send a positive message to those who have been affected in Northern Ireland”
